When a game is played in a casino it is not played with real currency but with small disc like object called casino token also known as chips, checks or cheques. The casino token used in table games is made of colored metal or clay composition and stand for various denominations whereas in the slot machine games, metallic token coins are used. When a gambler goes to play in the casino, he first exchanges the amount of money he wishes to play with into casino token and once a player has won tokens and wish to withdraw, he can interchange the casino token for real cash. However, except in Las Vegas where some casinos may accept chips from other casinos, in practicality the casino token has no value outside the casino.
Chips or casino token have different colors and values and sometimes when a game is being played for high stakes, some casinos use rectangular gaming plaques about the size of a playing card and marked by serial numbers. The typical chip colors are red, white, blue, green and black with many casinos offering an assortment of additional colors like pink, purple, yellow, orange and grey. Although from casino to casino and depending upon gaming jurisdiction casino token may differ in colors and denomination, there is an official list of chip colors and value. For example, 50 cent chips are mustard yellow colored, $1 is colored white (except in Nevada where the color variation of blue or gray may be used), $2.50 are colored pink. The more traditional colors of red, blue, yellow, green and black have denomination of $5, $10, $20, $25 and $100 respectively without exception. Uncommon colored chips are used for higher values such as purple, orange, grey and brown casino token are designated for $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.
