Gambling has been an age old occupation in human civilization. And ever since man has taken to gambling seriously, the question that has plagued his mind is what determines win or loss in a gambling game – expertise or luck. While the most traditional player would attribute his results to mere chance and dumb luck, a more curious gambler would try to analyze the pattern of the outcome of the games and devise some theory or tactics that would enable him to use the experience in future. However, it has to be remembered that since gambling is basically a game of chance not even the most skilled gambler can predict the winning result. What he can do instead is try to apply a mathematical idea to the system of placing bets and winning and losing and come up with a strategy that would counter the probability factor to some extent.

A case in point can be a game of blackjack. While a rookie player would say to win this gambling game, he must have some luck, a player with some expertise would immediately calculate that it is possible to outwit chance and play for assured winnings. In fact, nowadays card counting is accepted and acknowledged as an integral part in professional blackjack playing so much so that some casinos informally disallow players from indulging in this practice as undoubtedly this strategy in the hands of expert gamblers reduce house advantage and allows the players to go away with huge winnings.

However, when one thinks over it is no surprise to come up with the answer that gambling involves a bit of both and instead of it being an expertise versus luck scenario, only a combination of some expertise and some luck can enable a gambler to return as a winner.

A unique form of sports that has come up over the last century and become popular with the people is dog racing, especially greyhound racing. Traditionally an artificial hare or rabbit is used as a lure for the dogs that race after it and the one who reaches a pre-determined mark first is the winner. While dog racing is a form of enjoyment sports in many countries, in others like the United States (where 13 states offer this sports), England, Australia etc dog racing ahs industry status and is a form of popular non-casino based gambling for players. Parimutuel gambling is the popular medium through which people can stake on dogs and win wagers on the outcome of the race.

The popularity of the dog racing industry can be gauged by the extensive information that do rounds among interested people. There is not only a comprehensive database regarding the dog racing industry in terms of greyhound, pedigrees, races and venues but also a Greyhound Hall of Fame that shows how much the industry has found favor with the people.

The concerns for dog racing industry, however, have some serious grounds. While it is controversial how much the dog racing industry contributes towards the well being of the dogs, lately some greyhound adoption societies have sprung up to keep a tab on the dogs who are past the age of participating in races, and homes are found where the retired dogs can live as pets. Another matter of concern regarding the dog racing industry is that in the United States greyhound racing does not come under the jurisdiction of Animal Welfare Act. This makes the treatment and living condition of the dogs who are trained to take part in the races and also who are now retired from a life of racing arbitrarily in the hands of the individual owners with a few regulations enforced by the industry.

Chinese culture and gambling are often talked of in the same breath. One of the earliest evidence of gambling is found in a Chinese record dating back to 2300 B.C. There are also proofs that betting on dice games and Chinese chess was prevalent in about 300 B.C. and studies claim that in the late 1800s anyone could gamble on anything. An instance is gambling on buying meat where a customer plays for the stake of getting as much as three times the quantity he can buy against the chance he may get nothing for the money he is paying.

There is a close link between Chinese culture and gambling and this association has been given credence by the fact that several gambling games originated in this Asian tradition. It has been often argued that card playing was an activity developed in China since both paper and money from paper have been Chinese discoveries. Another widely held belief that connects Chinese culture and gambling is that the practice of shuffling paper money, adopted by the people as early as 900 A.D., has given us the practice of shuffling cards.

Gambling games like keno and pai gow poker, which are immensely popular today, have a definite traditional Chinese origin. Keno is a kind of ancient lottery game based on the same principle on which modern day lotteries function. And today, after so many thousands of years, keno finds its popularity among the casino going crowd although, except in some essential features, the version now played differs from the original gambling game of Chinese culture. Another important gambling game that has come down through tradition of Chinese culture is the somewhat complicated dominoes game called pai gow. Simplified and combined with poker, the modern-day version called pai gow poker is derived from some features of the ancient game and is a common game of interest among gamblers in the American casinos.

There are certain kinds of chips or casino token that are designated for particular casino games. For example, $2.50 chips are meant to be played for blackjack games whereas $20 chips are commonly used in gambling games like Baccarat, Pai Gow tiles and Pai gow poker. However, in some cases $20 chips can also be played in games of Craps or Roulette.

Interestingly, color of chips can vary in denomination depending upon the casino and place where the games are being played. A case in point are the low valued yellow chips that are generally valued at $20 in Atlantic City and Illinois although the same colored chips have value of $5 in south Californian poker tables and $2 in Connecticut and Arizona. Another example can be the blue chips used generally for $10 denomination in Atlantic City, but in Las Vegas and California, blue or white chips have $1 value.

Casino token of high denomination is only found in casinos who allow high wagering limits. While $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000 chips are offered by casinos where high stake games are played, these chips are not available for the general people who play for lower bet sizes. While there can be no upper limit to how much value a casino token can stand for, the largest value that has till date been used was by a plaque for $10 million in a Las Vegas casino. For the gamblers who participate in large tournaments like the World Series of Poker where games are played for very high stakes and large cash prize, round chips with denomination from lowest value up to $25,000 are always used. However, in some televised poker games and other cash games bundled paper bills are used for high values.

Casino token usage in European casinos follow more or less similar pattern though some venues may use pink chips for €2 and blue chips for €10 whereas for €1,000 and higher value, plaques are commonly used.

When a game is played in a casino it is not played with real currency but with small disc like object called casino token also known as chips, checks or cheques. The casino token used in table games is made of colored metal or clay composition and stand for various denominations whereas in the slot machine games, metallic token coins are used. When a gambler goes to play in the casino, he first exchanges the amount of money he wishes to play with into casino token and once a player has won tokens and wish to withdraw, he can interchange the casino token for real cash. However, except in Las Vegas where some casinos may accept chips from other casinos, in practicality the casino token has no value outside the casino.

Chips or casino token have different colors and values and sometimes when a game is being played for high stakes, some casinos use rectangular gaming plaques about the size of a playing card and marked by serial numbers. The typical chip colors are red, white, blue, green and black with many casinos offering an assortment of additional colors like pink, purple, yellow, orange and grey. Although from casino to casino and depending upon gaming jurisdiction casino token may differ in colors and denomination, there is an official list of chip colors and value. For example, 50 cent chips are mustard yellow colored, $1 is colored white (except in Nevada where the color variation of blue or gray may be used), $2.50 are colored pink. The more traditional colors of red, blue, yellow, green and black have denomination of $5, $10, $20, $25 and $100 respectively without exception. Uncommon colored chips are used for higher values such as purple, orange, grey and brown casino token are designated for $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.
